What is the difference between CTC and CTC.A?

Asked 4 years ago

I've been investigating the Canadian stock market for some time now, namely CTC-a has caught my eye. I really can't grasp the differences between the CTC and CTC.a. Is the CTC a better choice for me, since I'm not from Canada, or it doesn't really matter?

CTC represents common shares, while CTC.a is the symbol for the class A non-voting shares. CTC gives the investor the authority to decide how the corporate policy of the company should be framed. CTC.a, on the other hand, restricts the investor from participating in the decision-making process of the company.

These tickers represent each of Canadian Tire's two share classes.

The CTC stock is the ticker used for the company's Common Shares. CTC.A is for the Class A Non-Voting Shares, which means you cannot partake in Canadian Tire's corporate governance.

The former is 94% controlled by a small group of shareholders, while the latter has greater volumes (an average of 165,000) and is more active on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

You should not bother with CTC because there is very little movement. You are better off buying shares of CTC.A and joining other retail traders since there are higher volume levels.
