Can I transfer stocks to my son?
Asked 4 years ago
I want to transfer stocks to my son once he turns 18. Would it be possible, and what would the process entail?

Yes you can.
If it's a stock certificate, you sign at the back. Your guarantor must be present.
If you use a broker, they provide a form to fill. It has details such as your name, account number and stock description

Yes.
Unsure how to do it? Here are several steps to incorporate into your strategy:
- Request a transfer of stock ownership from your brokerage firm.
- Pen a letter with instructions and attach it to your Transfer of Stock Ownership form that is provided by the company.
- Sign your stock certificate (if it is a physical document) to verify authenticity.
- Make copies of all the documents that are a part of this process.
- Pay any necessary taxes. In some states, you could pay as high as a nickel per share.
A couple of other important notes: you need your name, account number, stock description, and possible guarantor.
